Hello Houston Makers!
I am excited to announce some big news: we are moving to a new warehouse! As of May 1st, we will be calling 3605 Texas Street our new home. This new spot is three blocks from our current location. When you map this address, Google sends you to an empty lot, so for clarification this is the warehouse behind Harrisburg Country Club and Fastenal.
This decision comes after many months of trying to make our current location work, but the unfortunate reality is that our beloved 100 Hutcheson is destined for demolition and the repairs needed to sustain it and meet city codes have become too great to allow us to grow our makerspace. We discussed several options with our landlord and mutually decided it made the most sense to find a new location for our makerspace.
We are very excited about our new location (it's 50 yards from the Coffee Plant stop on the soon to open green light rail line!) and the opportunity to build upon what is working for us while doing away with some of the things that are not. In this new space, we will become even more design focused and will have the opportunity to spend more time on growth and expansion. We have several exciting build projects lined up for the summer (did someone say large format CNC machines?!) and several former projects we can now revisit (like our Houston Makerspace tiny house artist residency program!).
You will notice if you drive by that this building is smaller than 100 Hutcheson, which is a good thing. More space is not always better, and we look forward to having less room to leave half finished projects lying around and keep tidy. All the shops and amenities you are used to will be coming to the new location; we'll just be more efficient with our space. For those of you wondering, we have several opportunities for expansion in this new location which we will look into should we decide we need more room to expand in the future. The best thing about our new building: we can be there forever if we want to! As many of you already know, the owner of 100 Hutcheson plans to knock the building down to build town homes, so our time here was limited from the beginning. In our new location we can plan long term, which feels great!
We have placed price tags on many items around 100 Hutcheson that we aren't planning on moving to 3605 Texas, and there are also many things we are giving away for free. I encourage you all to stop by and go shopping in the warehouse over the next ten days, but please call ahead to make sure there is a staff member on site (713-808-9708). The prices are pretty incredible ($15 for a working Delta chop saw for example), and for those of you that have been wanting to get your hands on some of the beautiful pieces of wood Bob brought with him: now's your chance!
Over the next month, we will be moving tools and equipment and fixing up our new building. If any of you would like a sneak peek of our new location before we open to the public on May 1st, we could use some help with moving and painting! Please email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 713-808-9708 to discuss availability and help needed.
Because of the move, we will be postponing all events until May. Saturday May 16th will be our re-grand opening and one year anniversary party to welcome you all to 3605 Texas Street.
As we approach our one year anniversary, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support of Houston Makerspace. We have made great memories at 100 Hutcheson Street, all with the help and support of our amazing Houston community!
See you soon,
Maclean Smyth, Founder and Director
