News and Updates: We Have Dedicated Desks and Private Studios Currently Available!

Hi Makers!

Maclean here. I'm going to try to start doing something I've been meaning to do for over a year and post weekly (or as weekly as possible) Houston Makerspace updates. It's truly incredible how much goes on around here in a seven day period, and probably at least some of it is interesting (that was a trick! All of it is totally awesome!).

Truth be told, I usually don't get too many moments to pause and reflect on what goes on around me in this old warehouse. We're still 100% volunteer-run, so most weeks we're just happy to still be here. I would love it if, in the comments, y'all could post some encouragement for my amazing staff, who works for free to make sure we can provide tools, machines, resources, education, and community for makers of all skill levels for a reasonable price. Maybe tell us something about one of our staff members, or about Houston Makerspace in general, that inspired or motivated you to MAKE.

Ok, on to updates!

So many people have asked us to create a space that can be theirs and theirs alone, and we listened. For the woodworkers, the welders, the machinists, and the messy sorts, we have two options for private studio space on the shop floor:

  • 140 square feet (10'x14') behind the wood shop. This space is partially built out with three walls, two large work tables, and 110v and 220v electrical outlets
  • 600 square feet (24'x25') between our jewelry and welding shops. This space has one concrete wall and a ton of power (both 110v, 220v, and junction boxes for hardwiring). Renters are encouraged to build out their studios however they would like (with a nod to code compliance, of course).

All shop floor private studio space is $1.50 per square foot and comes with electricity, water, 24 hour access to the warehouse, our friendly front desk staff acting as concierge during open hours (T-Sa 10-8; Su 12-5), restroom access, kitchenette access, loading dock access...I can keep going, but there are so many amenities. Houston Makerspace membership is not included in private studio rental, and must be added separately. If you're interested in private studio space, fill out this Interest Form or stop by during open hours to check it out!

In addition to the private studio space we have carved out on the shop floor, we have remodeled our upstairs to accommodate seven dedicated desks for the graphic designers, illustrators, sewing enthusiasts, architects, and the otherwise desk-friendly creatives. We have a handy flyer (made by volunteer Kat Compton) with more information:

Again, those interested in private or dedicated space at Houston Makerspace should fill out this short Interest Form or stop by during open hours for a tour!

Tuesday-Thursday of this week is our sold out Woodworking Basics: From Hand Tools to Power Tools series, taught by Jake Rynearson of Steamboat Ampworks. For anyone interested in pursuing woodworking that has limited or rusty knowledge, this is the class for you! This class also certifies you in our woodshop. We'll be listing the February series today or tomorrow, which will run on February 16, 17, and 18 from 6-9 pm. Sign up quick, since this class always sells out!

On Thursday, Ford and Hilary Waters of FMW Fab Lab, are offering a special staff-only version of their popular Metal Working Basics: Level 1, Welding Steel class, which sold out in like 5 minutes! Our staff is all about melting metal. February's public class is full, but there are still three spots left in March's class! Sign up here!

Want to grow your own food? There are four spots left in Basics of Backyard Vegetable Gardening this Saturday with Farmer Becca of Sown and Grown. Sign up here!

Kaila Lewis of Lee Lewis Designs is offering a Hammered Brass Bangles class this Saturday too! This class is an easy introduction in working with metal, and all students will leave with at least one bracelet. GUYS: come make a bracelet for your girlfriend for Valentine's Day. Three spots left - Sign up here!

Also on Saturday, Amber Chiozza is teaching her first class at Houston Makerspace, Book Making: Binding a Coptic Journal or Sketchbook. This class looks so cool! Each student will take home a custom journal or sketchbook AND this class is open to anyone over the age of 15 (most of our classes are 18 and up)! There are still ten spots left in this class. Sign up here!

There's a ton more to tell y'all, but I feel like this has gotten a little long, so I'll leave you with a teaser photo for next week:

Happy Making!
